GDP ( Gross domestic product)
The
Gross Domestic Product measures the value of all economic activities within a
country. We can also say that GDP is the sum of the Market values or prices of
all final goods and services produced in an economy during a period time.
There
are 3 types of GDP
1.Real Gross Domestic
Product: This is the GDP after inflation has been
taken into account.
2.Nominal Gross Domestic Product: It is the
GDP at current prices ( with inflation)
3.Gross National Product: It is the actual National Income of the country
GDP
was calculated by National agencies. Within each country, GDP is normally
measured by a national government statistical agency, as private sector organizations do not have
access to the information required ( especially information on expenditure and
production by governments).
In
India, GDP released by the Central Statistics Office under Ministry of Statistics
and Programme Implementation. The four components of Gross Domestic Product
are personal consumption, Government spending and net
exports. GDP is the single best indicator of economic growth.
The
large GDP is a good point for any country it is because GDP is high it means
that the country is increasing the amount of production that is taking place in
the economy and the citizens have a higher income and hence are spending more.
There is an increase in the lifestyle of the citizens and there are more
individuals goings to college.
GEP ( Gross EnvironmentProduct ) : It stands for Gross Environment Product,
it is the calculation for an exhaustive evaluation of all the forest and
environment resources that we have in all the states. Its importance is more
than Green GDP.
Green Gross Domestic Product ( green GDP): It is an index of economic growth with the
environmental consequences of that growth factored into a country’s conventional
GDP. It monetizes the loss of
biodiversity and accounts for costs caused by climate change.
GDP
indicates economic growth, but does not explain ecological status- the status of the forest, air, water and soil, so the disadvantages were solved by the help of GEP that’s
why we need Gross Environment Product
Uttrakhand first state in country measure Gross
Environment Product
Uttrakhand
woke up to Gross Environment Product after the devastating floods of 2013. A five-member committee was constituted on 5 March 2020 by the state government. It’s
purpose is to measure the quality of water, air, earth and forests in the state
and report annually on the state of Uttrakhand’s ecosystem.
The
committee with illustrious experts and scientists will be looking into how to
devise a method to measure the GEP in the same way like GDP.
This
was done just because of Anil Prakash Joshi, He is awarded by the Padma shree Award ( most prestigious
Award) for being an environmentalist. He has been advocating the implementation
of Gross Environmental Product across the country especially in the Himalayas for years. The main
purpose of GEP is to assess annually the growth and loss of the ecosystem. It includes
the measure of Forest cover, Tree density, Soil erosion, Groundwater table, Air
quality, Dissolved oxygen in river water and measures for protecting the
environment. The committee which was made by Uttrakhand government will decide
how to measure these values.
Why uttrakhand choose for Gross Environment Product ( GEP )
There
are lots of rivers in the Uttrakhand
which cause it is also known as the Himalyan State known to be the
source of several snow-fed rivers but now it has struggled to meet its own
demand for water that’s why we need to measure GEP in Uttrakhand.
Dehradun
city stood at 15th post among 287 cities across India in terms of
Air pollution with PM10 levels at 217 micrograms per cubic meter while Kanpur
city stood at 17th position with PM10 levels of 210 micrograms per
cubic meter for the year 2018. Dehradun is winter capital of Uttrakhand and if
we see this status of Uttrakhand so it proved to be a negative point for Uttrakhand. The summer
capital of uttrakhand is Gairsain it also need to measure Gross
Environment Product.
