2nd Kalvari class submarine INS Khanderi launched in Mumbai
  • INS Khanderi – the second of the Kalvari class submarines – was launched at the Mazagaon Dock Limited in Mumbai.
  • It has superior stealth capabilities and also precision guided weapons that can be launched while underwater or on surface.
  • The submarine will now undergo rigorous tests and trials, both in the harbour and at sea, till December 2017.
BMW India appoints ex-Harley-Davidson India MD as President
  • BMW has appointed former Harley-Davidson India MD Vikram Pawah as the President of its India operations.
  • Pawah has previously worked with Honda Cars in India and Australia as the Assistant Vice President and Operating Head of Sales.
  • Current acting President Frank Schloeder will assume the position of Head of Business Steering - Luxury Class in Germany.
UK becomes first country to recognise parkour as a sport
  • The United Kingdom has become the world's first country to officially recognise parkour as a sport.
  • Parkour, also known as freerunning, is similar to military obstacle training and involves a participant getting from one point to another, tackling terrain using only his/her natural body strength.
  • The sport has been considered controversial since it uses minimal protection gear.
Citibank launches voice verification for phone banking
  • Citibank has launched voice verification for its phone banking clients to replace the current authentication process of remembering PINs or answering verification questions.
  • The bank said identifying a user's unique voiceprint will take 15 seconds, down from an average 45 seconds it takes currently.
  • The authentication will be completed automatically while the customers speak to the bank official.
Indian Railways launches new IRCTC Rail Connect app for Android
  • Indian Railways has launched new IRCTC Rail Connect app that will replace the previous IRCTC app that was launched back in 2014.
  • Indian Railways E-ticketing System caters to over 10 lakhs passengers daily (comprising 58% of total reserved passengers), said Minister of Railways Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu launching the app.
  • The new app will increase the ease to users in booking and has been developed to bring the power of next generation e-ticketing system with enhanced security.
  • The IRCTC Rail Connect will also be inter-connected with IRCTC AIR, Food on Track mobile apps to facilitate booking of air tickets and food through e-catering.
HDFC ERGO Launches Trade Credit Insurance Policy Securing Trade Receivables
  • HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company, India’s third largest non-life insurance provider in the private sector, announced the launch of its new policy for corporate, the Trade Credit Insurance Policy.
  • The new policy, also known as Credit Insurance Policy, safeguards suppliers against the risks of non-payment for the goods or services delivered to the buyers.
  • Under this, the insurer covers a portfolio of buyers and pays an agreed percentage of the invoice or receivables that remain unpaid as a result of insolvency, bankruptcy or protracted default.
World Bank projects global growth at 2.7% in 2017
  • World Bank projected a global growth of 2.7% in 2017, even as it observed that stagnant global trade, subdued investment and heightened policy uncertainty marked another difficult year for the world economy. 
  • World Bank President Jim Yong Kim stated that global economic growth is forecast to accelerate moderately to 2.7% in 2017 after a post-crisis low of 2.3% in 2016.
Government to add 40 more towns to Smart Cities list
  • The government will add by next month 40 more cities to the list of towns it wants to develop as Smart Cities by providing funds for initiating urban reforms, Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said today. The addition of 40 new cities will take the total Smart Cities to 100. 
  • Since January last year, the government has announced three lists of smart cities which will get Rs 200 crore for improving their infrastructure. 
Arunachal signs MoU with NDDB to promote dairy development
  • With a view to promoting the dairy sector and rural livelihoods in Arunachal Pradesh, the border state has signed a MoU with National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) during the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2017.
  •  A State Government delegation led by Shakuntala Gamlin participated in the Summit.
Vedanta launches smart class project in Chitradurga
  • Vedanta Foundation and Vedanta Sesa Goa Iron Ore, in collaboration with the Karnataka Directorate of Education, have launched a pilot project to promote digital education in schools across the State.
  • The Deputy Director of Public Instruction, Chitradurga district, Revana Siddappa, has launched ‘The Smart Class’ project.

  • Anjani Portland Cement has commissioned a 16-mega watt (MW) coal-based captive power plant at its cement unit in Telangana. Anjani Cement is a high-quality cement prepared from the finest raw material Owing to optimum water demand.
Tisca Chopra wins Best Actress Award for Chutney
  • Actress Tisca Chopra named as Best Actress for Chutney at the Jio Filmfare Short Film Awards. 
  • Popular actress Tisca Chopra stated that winning her first Filmfare Award for short film Chutney is extra special as it’s a project she not just acted in, but also produced and co-wrote.
Vikram Pawah new President for BMW Group India
  • Vikram Pawah has been appointed as the president of BMW Group India, effective from March 1, 2017.
  • He will take over from Frank Schloeder, who will assume new position at BMW Group headquarters in Germany.
Norway becomes first country to cease FM radio broadcasting
  • Norway has become the first country to cease FM radio broadcasting. 
  • The northern county of Nordland has stopped broadcasting using analogue frequencies as the Government plans to roll out digital-only radio over the course of the year.
  • According to the national broadcaster, NRK, nationwide radio channels began switching to digital audio broadcasting that offers a wider range of broadcasting options and greater sound quality.
PR Sreejesh becomes member of FIH Athletes' Committee
  • The Indian hockey team captain PR Sreejesh has became a member of International Hockey Federation Athletes' Committee. 
  • The Committee comprises a total of eight current and former hockey players who have the responsibility to act as a liaison between the FIH and the athletes to make sure the players have voice in the FIH decision-making process.
