Sourabh Varma wins men’s singles title at Chinese Taipei Open
  • Indian shuttler Sourabh Verma (23-year) has clinched the men’s singles title at the Chinese Taipei Open badminton by defeating Malaysia’s Daren Liew in the summit clash of the Grand Prix tournament in Taipei City.
Boxer Neeraj Goyat retains WBC Asia welterweight title
  • Indian boxer Neeraj Goyat (24-years) has retained his WBC welterweight Asia title by outpunching Australia’s Ben Kite in New Delhi. 
  • Neeraj has become the first Indian boxer to defend a pro title. 
  • The fight was organised by the Professional Boxing Organisation of India.
16th October : World Food Day
  • World Food Day is celebrated every year around the world on 16th October in honour of the date of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (UN). 
  • The theme of 2016 is Climate change: “Climate is changing. Food and agriculture must too”.
17th October: International Day for the Eradication of Poverty
  • The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is an international observance celebrated every year on 17th October throughout the world. 
  • The theme of 2016 is Moving from humiliation and exclusion to participation: Ending poverty in all its forms.
C Radhakrishnan selected for Mathrubhumi Literary award
  • Eminent writer C Radhakrishnan has been selected for the Mathrubhumi Literary Award-2016 in recognition of his contribution to the field of literature. 
  • He was selected by a panel chaired by novelist M Mukundan. 
  • The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakh, a citation and a statuette.
China launches its longest-ever manned mission to space
  • China has launched spacecraft in the longest-ever manned mission, taking two astronauts into orbit. 
  • They will spend a month aboard an experimental space laboratory that is part of a broader plan to have a permanent manned space station in service around 2022. 
  • The Shenzhou 11 blasted off on a Long March rocket at 7:30 AM local time from the remote launch site in Jiuquan, in the Gobi desert, in images carried live on state television.
Govt. grants BP Plc licence to set up petrol pumps in India
  • The Union Government has formally granted a licence to Europe’s third-biggest oil company BP to set up 3,500 petrol pumps in India. 
  • BP has been granted the licence to market Motor Spirit (petrol) and High-Speed Diesel (diesel). 
  • State-owned Indian Oil Corp (IOC) owns 25,363 petrol pumps, Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL) 13,802 stations and Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL) 13,439 outlets.
Himachal Pradesh Police celebrates Cyber Crime awareness week
  • Himachal Pradesh Police is celebrating Cyber Crime awareness week. 
  • The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) an institution of Department of Electronics & Information Technology under the Ministry of Communication & Information Technology is helping the police. 
  • The Himachal Pradesh police has planned the three-phase strategy to aware the common people on cyber-crime in the state. 
  • The focus would be on educating the School and College students during the campaign.
Lt Gen Bipin Rawat to be next Indian Army chief; B.S Dhanoa to be IAF chief
  •  The Vice Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Bipin Rawat will be the new Chief of Army Staff, while Air Marshal BS Dhanoa, the next Chief of Air Staff. They will take charge in the afternoon of 31st of this month.
  •  Lt. Gen Rawat will replace General Dalbir Singh. Lt. Gen has tremendous hands on experience of serving in combat areas, and at various functional levels in the Indian Army over the last three decades. He has handled various operational responsibilities in many areas, including along the LoC with Pakistan, the LAC with China, and in the North-East. 
  • Air Marshal Dhanoa, who will replace Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha, was commissioned into the fighter stream of the Air Force in June 1978. He has served in various squadrons, and also in the Intelligence Directorate of Air Headquarters.
Rajiv Jain named next Director of IB, AK Dhasmana to head RAW
  • Jharkhand cadre IPS officer Rajiv Jain was appointed as the new chief of Intelligence Bureau (IB) while Anil Dhasmana will head external intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). Both the officers will have a tenure of two years. Jain, who is at present serving as the Special Director in the IB, will take over on January 1 after the incumbent Dineshwar Sharma completes his two-year tenure on December 31, 2016.
  •  In another appointment, Anil Dhasmana will take over the reins of the Research and Analysis Wing, an organisation which looks after the external intelligence of the country. He succeeds Rajinder Khanna who completes his tenure this year end.
Himachal: First Cyber crime police station opens in Shimla
  • In Himachal Pradesh, the first Cyber Crime Police Station has been opened at state police headquarter in Shimla. Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh inaugurated this Police Station through video conferencing from his office.
  • According to Deputy Inspector General CID and Cyber Crime Vinod Kumar Dhawan, the main objective of this police station is to deal with increasing crime based on misuse of information technology by the High tech criminals.
Odisha: Govt sets target for construction of 1000 km concrete road
  • Odisha government has decided to construct more 2,000 kilometre of cement concrete roads under the Gopabandhu Gramin Yojana in rural areas by March 2017. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik issued this direction while chairing a review meeting on the progress of concrete road construction works in rural areas at the State Secretariat in Bhubaneswar. 
  • The State government has allocated 1,000 crore rupees for the Gopabandhu Gramin Yojana in the current year’s Budget. The sanctioned funds will be utilised in 30 districts of the State for for road construction and drinking water facilities in rural areas.
State Bank MobiCash Mobile Wallet launched
  • Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Arun Jaitley and Minister of State for Communications (Independent charge) and Minster of State for Railways Manoj Sinha has jointly launched State Bank MobiCash Mobile Wallet, a product by SBI and BSNL. 
  • While introducing the service, Finance Minister appreciated the broader vision of SBI and BSNL to bring a Wallet both for smart and feature phones.
Vijender Singh retains WBO-Asia Pacific Super title
  • Indian boxing star Vijender Singh knocked out former world Francis Cheka to retain WBO-Asia Pacific Super Middleweight title. Vijender took less than 10 minutes to beat Tanzanian boxer to defend his title at the packed Thyagraj Stadium in New Delhi last night. 
  • Vijender landed the winning blow in the third round of what was to be a 10-round contest to leave Cheka dazed and delirious.
Paris opens 'world's largest non-permanent indoor ice rink'
  • A 2,700-square-meter skating space, which is being considered the world's largest non-permanent indoor ice rink, recently opened at the Grand Palais in Paris. Over 100 workers constructed the ice rink, which will remain open until January 2. The rink was inaugurated by a show featuring skating stunts and acrobatics as part of the 'Grand Palais des Glaces' festival.
