Janet Reno first female US Attorney General Dies

  • She began her career in politics in 1971 when she was named staff director of the Judiciary Committee of the Florida House of Representatives.
  • She was the first woman to serve as Attorney General and the second-longest serving Attorney General in U.S. history, after William Witt.
  • Janet Reno, the first woman to be appointed as Attorney General of US, passed away as a consequence of Parkinson’s disease. 
  • She was 78.
  • Reno curated a compilation of old-time American songs performed by contemporary artists called the Song of America.
  • Reno enrolled at Harvard Law School, one of only 16 women in a class of 500 students.
  •  Reno worked as an attorney for two Miami law firms from 1963 to 1971. 
Corp Bank inks pact with Indian Army

  • Corporation Bank has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian Army on the defense salary package.
  • Corporation Bank would provide free and concessional services to the Army under the MoU. 
  • The services include free drafts, cheque books, funds transfers to any bank in India through RTGS/ NEFT, free ATM cards, unlimited transactions on all ATM, including that of other banks.
  • The bank would also provide free personal accident insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh and Rs 10 lakh up to the age of 70 years and air insurance cover of Rs 50 lakh, the Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
  •  The Ministry of Defense said that Corporation Bank would provide free or concessional services to the army under the pact. 
UCO Bank raises Rs 271 equity from LIC

  • UCO Bank has announced that it would raise Rs.271 crore from Life Insurance Corporation of India in preferential allotment of equal shares at Rs.37.74 apiece.
  •  UCO Bank is one of the many lenders which are placing shares with LIC on preferential basis to bring down government stake and raise public holding. 
  • Banks need capital also to meet Basel III stringent capital norm.
Amitav Ghosh honoured as TaTa Litrature Award

  • Amitav Ghosh is an Indian-American author best known for his work in English fiction.
  • Amitav Ghosh, has been named as  2016 Tata Literature Live.
  • He will be awarded in Mumbai Lit Fest's annual awards ceremony scheduled from Nov 20.
  • He also won the Inlaks Foundation scholarship to complete a D. Phil. in social anthropology at St Edmund Hall, Oxford, under the supervision of Peter Lienhardt.
  • The Government of India awarded him the civilian honor of Pad ma Shri in 2007.
  • The award has been instituted by the festival to recognize and honor outstanding contributions in the Indian literary space.
  • Amitav Ghosh is an author extraordinaire who has not only made a prominent place in Indian literature but has also earned international acclaim for his outstanding work. 
  • The list of finest contemporary Indian-English writers remains incomplete without the name of Amitav Ghosh. 
India first LNG - powered bus

  •  India’s first liquefied natural gas-driven bus has been launched in Kerala. 
  • Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan jointly flagged off the first pilot run eco-friendly bus.
  • The project has been a joint effort of Petrol LNG Limited (PLL), Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOL) and Tata Motors Ltd.
  • LNG is considered to be a cleaner and safer fuel which emits 50% less carbon, for mass transportation. 
  • LNG eco-friendly and more economical compared to diesel for public transportation.
  • In upcoming year India is expecting to see an increase in demand for LNG over the coming years.
  • Also owing in the  increased in demand from the power, fertilizer and automotive sectors, the government plans to move towards a gas-based economy.
  • LNG  is providing for a longer range at more than 700 km in one filling.
  •  LPG powered vehicles is also ensure better Noise Vibration Harshness (NVH) characteristics for the comfort of passenger.
President of India inaugrated ECGC

  • The President of India  Shri Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of Export Credit Guarantee Corporation of India.
  • The president of  India inaugurated  Limited (ECGC) on November 8, 2016 in New Delhi.
  • The President said that in the present day context the role of an Export Credit Agency (ECA) is of central importance in international trade and investment flows.
  •  It is necessary that all stakeholders in the ECGC provide the necessary leadership and direction for it to move forward. 
  • The function of  ECGC is well attended by a large number of bankers, exporters, representatives of trade bodies and prominent people from the government, business and trade. 
  • ECGC has weathered many a storm and protected exporters in times of geopolitical turmoil, economic downturns and currency collapses.
  • ECGC’s growth has been commendable; its Total Business Covered has grown from Rs. 75 crore in FY1966 to Rs. 2,70,000 crores in FY2016.
